Sentenced to five years, South African opposition leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years in prison for unlawfully discharging a firearm during a political rally eight years ago.
The ruling, delivered by Magistrate Twanet Olivier, found that the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) had deliberately violated firearm regulations when he fired an assault rifle into the air during an EFF celebration in 2018.
The case, widely seen as politically sensitive, drew significant public attention. Dozens of EFF supporters, dressed in the partyโs signature red attire, gathered outside the courthouse in a show of solidarity with their leader during the sentencing.
Malemaโs conviction marks a major development in South Africaโs political landscape, raising questions about leadership accountability and the enforcement of firearm laws among public figures.
