The Nigeria Upper Legislative Chamber who is groaning over the “horrific killing of 16 soldiers” as it described in a motion sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua on Tuesday quickly switched mood to uncontrollable laughter.
The entire Chamber switched to a laughing mood as the Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Alli Sharafadeen Abiodun called on the upper legislative Chamber to name one of the Committee rooms after the late Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Mahood Olalekan Balogun.
Rising on Order 41 of Senate Rules, Senator Abiodun, a first timer formally announced the death of the 42 Olubadan of Ibadan and further sought the Chamber’s nod to rename a Committee room after the late monarch.
The prayer to rename the Senate Committee room was ignored as only the one-minute silence was observed through a voice vote on the order of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
This was probably because it has never happened in the history of democracy where a Committee room or Chamber is named after a personality.
The first-class monarch died on Thursday 14th March, 2024 after spending two years on the throne as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan land.
