Tension has gripped the Okon-Aku community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State following the killing of a young man and the burning of several houses and vehicles during a violent clash.
The victim, identified as Mr. Igwe Akuma from the Ndi Uma compound, was reportedly preparing for his wedding, which was only days away, before he was murdered on Friday.
In a joint statement issued on Saturday, the Udumeze of Ohafia, Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, alongside the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, condemned both the killing and the destruction that followed.
The royal fathers described the incident as โgruesome and unjustifiable,โ stressing that no level of provocation could warrant taking the life of an Ohafia son or destroying property. They lamented that such violence was not the right way to begin the new year and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
Appealing for calm, the traditional council urged residents of the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds to avoid further confrontation, noting that efforts were underway with security agencies to prevent escalation.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said officers from the Ohafia Division arrested some suspects. She added that two tactical police teams were deployed to restore order while investigations continue.
Authorities appealed to community members to maintain peace as security operatives intensify efforts to uncover the culprits behind the violence.
