…Reasons behind the coup
…ECOWAS orders Defence Chiefs on standby for military action In Niger
…Burkina Faso, Mali warns against military intervention in Niger
The Niger Coup is not the first military coup in a West African country as its neighbours Mali and Burkina Faso had already succumbed to military coups without ECOWAS diplomatic or military intervention.
The power grab – which marks the seventh military takeover in less than three years in West and Central Africa – drew immediate condemnation from the African Union, the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and other powers.
Regional bloc ECOWAS has imposed sanctions, including a halt in all financial transactions and a national assets freeze. It also said it could authorise force to reinstate Bazoum, who observers believe is being held at his house in the capital, Niamey.
IdanNews reports that ECOWAS Chair President Omar Alieu Touray on Thursday said the bloc has placed defence chiefs in member states on standby for potential military action in the Niger Republic in response to the coup leader’s defiance of its 7-day ultimatum to restore constitutional order. “Said ECOWAS remained committed to resolving the crisis in Niger through peaceful means, but military intervention was a possibility if the coup leaders did not comply with the bloc’s demands.”
However, ECOWAS’ concentration on the Niger coup can be regarded as it is important in the West African country.
Niger is a key part of the African region known as the Sahel – a belt of land that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea. The area is plagued by jihadists and beset by military regimes.
Niger Republic is the largest country in West Africa, it’s a bellwether state in many ways.
Politically, it had been seen as an example of relative democratic stability in recent years.
Economically, it is rich in uranium – producing 7% of all global supplies. The radioactive metal looms so large in the country’s economy that one of the grandest thoroughfares in the capital, Niamey, is named the Avenue de l’Uranium.
Strategically, it hosts French and US military bases and is seen as a key partner in the fight against Islamist insurgents.
The US state department describes Niger as “important as a linchpin for stability in the Sahel” and “a reliable counter-terrorism partner” against various Islamist groups linked to either Islamic State or al-Qaeda.
President Bazoum’s government has been a partner to European countries trying to stop the flow of migrants across the Mediterranean Sea, agreeing to take back hundreds of migrants from detention centres in Libya.
He has also cracked down on human traffickers in what had been a key transit point between other countries in West Africa and those further north.
Recall that General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, had earlier hinted that military action could be deployed to arrest what he termed as a hostage situation in Niger.
“We need to restore constitutional order, anything can happen. Heads of state have said nothing is off the table,” he said. “We are not sure which country will be next; if we do not arrest this situation, West Africa is going to be a laughing stock of Africa and the world.”
Reasons behind the coup happen?
Niger’s coup leaders, who have named General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the former presidential guard chief, as head of state, said they overthrew Bazoum over poor governance and discontent with the way he handled security threats from groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS (ISIL).
The Sahel region is a turbulent and unstable part of the world and democracy is currently in retreat there.
Violent Islamist groups have gained ground by controlling territory and conducting attacks in the tri-border region between Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.
The mutinous soldiers in Niger have cited this worsening security situation as a reason for their uprising, although Niger was handling the insurgencies far better than Mali and Burkina Faso before their coups.
The growing unrest has led some to believe that only harsh military crackdowns can solve the problem, hence the popular support that the coup seems to enjoy in some quarters.
However, it is far from clear that a military junta would have greater success in tackling the insurgents than the recently ousted government. The takeovers in neighbouring countries have not made much difference.
However, Niger’s people consistently rank as having the lowest standards of living anywhere in the world.
ECOWAS orders Defence Chiefs on standby for military action In Niger
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has placed defence chiefs in member states on standby for potential military action in the Niger Republic, following the ongoing military coup that saw the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum.
The decision was made at an extraordinary meeting of ECOWAS leaders in Abuja, Nigeria, on Thursday. The meeting was called to discuss the crisis in Niger and to formulate a response.
ECOWAS Chair President Omar Alieu Touray said that the bloc had decided to activate its standby force in response to the coup leader’s defiance of its 7-day ultimatum to restore constitutional order.
“We have decided to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements immediately,” Touray said. “We have also ordered the deployment of the force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.”
Touray stressed that ECOWAS remained committed to resolving the crisis in Niger through peaceful means, but said that military intervention was a possibility if the coup leaders did not comply with the bloc’s demands.
The force, which is called the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF), is headquartered in Nigeria and Senegal. It has a command element of 300 troops, and it can be deployed within 7 to 10 days of a crisis.
The ECOWAS-Standby Force is meant to be a Rapidly-Deployable Military Force which consists of between 6,500 and 10,000 Troops
The ESF is funded by ECOWAS member states, but it also receives foreign support from the United States and France.
Burkina Faso, Mali warn against military intervention in Niger
Niger’s neighbours say any intervention to restore deposed President Mohamed Bazoum will be considered a ‘declaration of war’ against them.
The military governments of Burkina Faso and Mali have warned that any military intervention against Niger coup leaders in Niger would be considered a “declaration of war” against their nations.
Niger’s neighbours issued the warning in joint statements read out on their national broadcasters days after West African leaders threatened to use force to reinstate Niger’s deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.
“The transitional governments of Burkina Faso and Mali express their fraternal solidarity. to the people of Niger, who have decided with full responsibility to take their destiny in hand and assume the fullness of their sovereignty before history,” the military governments of the two countries said.
“Any military intervention against Niger would be tantamount to a declaration of war against Burkina Faso and Mali,” they warned, adding that such a move could result in “disastrous consequences” that “could destabilise the entire region”.
The Burkinabe and Malian military authorities also said they “refuse to apply” the “illegal, illegitimate and inhumane sanctions against the people and authorities of Niger”.
The coup in Niger on July 26 has sent shockwaves across West Africa, pitting the country’s former Western allies and regional bodies against other countries in the region.
In addition to Burkina Faso and Mali, Guinea’s President Mamady Doumbouya – whose government was also the result of a coup – has also expressed “disagreement with the sanctions recommended but ECOWAS, including military intervention”.
In a social media post on Monday, Doumbouya’s office said the sanctions “are options that would not be a solution to the current problem but would lead to a humanitarian disaster whose consequences could extend beyond the borders of Niger”.
Doumbouya’s office also said it had “decided not to apply these sanctions, which it considers illegitimate and inhumane”, and urged ECOWAS to “reconsider its position”.
The expressions of support from Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea came as Niger’s military attempted to consolidate its coup by arresting top officials of the toppled government. The mines minister, oil minister and head of the ruling party were among those taken into custody on Monday, according to Bazoum’s PNDS party.
The coup leaders had previously arrested the interior minister, transport minister and a former defence minister, the party said.
Nigeria, often referred to as the “Giant of Africa,” is a nation of vast potential and resources. However, it faces numerous challenges that hinder its progress toward sustainable development and economic growth. These challenges include unemployment, poverty, food insecurity, and a lack of diverse revenue streams. One potential avenue to address these issues is through the promotion and strategic development of cattle rearing, an industry deeply rooted in the country’s culture and history. This article explores how cattle rearing can serve as an economic solution to Nigeria’s challenges, drawing upon statistics from the ‘Data Speaks report to provide a comprehensive analysis.
The Significance of Cattle Rearing in Nigeria
Cattle rearing has long been an integral part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage, playing a significant role in the lives of many communities across the nation. For centuries, cattle have been a symbol of wealth, status, and sustenance. They are not only a source of meat but also provide leather, milk, and other by-products that have economic value. In recent times, the cattle rearing industry has faced challenges due to factors such as climate change, land degradation, and conflicts between herders and farmers. However, with careful planning and investment, cattle rearing can become a driving force for economic growth.
Current State of Cattle Rearing in Nigeria: A Data-Driven Perspective
According to the ‘Data Speaks’ report, Nigeria has one of the largest livestock populations in Africa, with cattle constituting a significant portion of this livestock. The data highlights that:
A Transformative Solution for Nigeria’s Challenges
Nigeria grapples with an array of complex challenges, including unemployment, poverty, food insecurity, and economic diversification. To address these multifaceted issues, a holistic approach is required, one that capitalizes on the country’s diverse resources and cultural heritage. Cattle rearing, deeply entrenched in Nigeria’s history and tradition, emerges as a potential economic solution. By examining the comparative statistics from ‘Data Speaks’ on cattle populations and milk production in the Netherlands, Kenya, and Nigeria, we can elucidate how this industry can become a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
Cattle Rearing in Nigeria: A Precious Resource
The ‘Data Speaks’ report underscores the significance of cattle rearing in Nigeria, with the country boasting a cattle population of approximately 21.2 million. This figure places Nigeria in close proximity to Kenya’s 22.9 million cattle and reveals the striking contrast with the Netherlands, which maintains a cattle population of 3.7 million. Despite the differences in scale, it’s intriguing to note that Nigeria and Kenya each possess around six times more cattle than the Netherlands.
This substantial cattle population endows Nigeria with a vast resource base that, if harnessed strategically, can drive transformative change across various sectors of the economy.
Milk Production: A Key Indicator of Economic Potential
Milk production serves as a pivotal indicator of a nation’s economic potential within the cattle rearing industry. According to the ‘Data Speaks’ report, Nigeria currently produces approximately 0.53 billion liters of milk. This figure pales in comparison to Kenya’s 4.6 billion liters and the Netherlands’ staggering 14.5 billion liters. Here, the glaring disparity between the Netherlands’ output and that of Nigeria and Kenya becomes evident, with the Netherlands producing nearly three times more milk than Kenya and approximately 23 times more milk than Nigeria.
Moreover, when examining milk yield per cow per day, the divergence is even more pronounced. The Netherlands records an impressive 29 liters per cow, followed by Kenya with 8.5 liters and Nigeria with 2.3 liters. This discrepancy highlights the potential for improvement in Nigeria’s cattle rearing practices, aiming to achieve higher milk yields and overall productivity.
Cattle Rearing as an Economic Driver
The comparative data underpins the untapped potential within Nigeria’s cattle rearing industry. To harness this potential as a solution to Nigeria’s economic challenges, a multifaceted strategy is essential:
Statistics emphasize the immense potential that cattle rearing holds for Nigeria’s economic transformation. By analyzing the cattle populations, milk production, and milk yield of the Netherlands, Kenya, and Nigeria, we uncover a wealth of opportunities for growth and development. Cattle rearing, deeply rooted in Nigeria’s heritage, can drive employment, food security, and revenue diversification. However, achieving this potential requires a concerted effort involving modernization, value chain development, research, sustainability, and capacity building. By embracing these strategies, Nigeria can harness its cattle rearing heritage to surmount its challenges and pave the way for a prosperous and sustainable future.
It is the seventh day since the military coup took place in Niger Republic, where the elected President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown.
However, idanNew gathered that the Niger army spokesman Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane. on 26th of July 2023, declared on national television that the military had decided to put an end to the regime “you are familiar with,” and suspended all country institutions, ordered all borders to be closed.
President Bazoum was elected to office in 2021 in Niger’s first democratic and peaceful transition of power since independence in 1960.
Bazoum was the first elected leader to succeed another in Niger since independence in 1960. Now his captors have suspended the country’s constitution and installed Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani as head of state.
IdanNews gathered some key events in the week since a military coup took place in Niger
Wednesday, July 26Niger’s presidency said on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that members of the presidential guard tried to move against President Mohamed Bazoum in an apparent coup attempt, warning that the army was ready to attack them if they did not back down.
It said the president and his family were well after news agencies quoted security sources as saying that the guards were holding Bazoum inside the presidential palace in the capital, Niamey.
Members of the presidential guard dispersed supporters of the president as they were trying to approach the presidential complex.
Regional bodies swiftly reacted to the power grab. The West African bloc ECOWAS and the African Union (AU) lashed what they called an “attempted coup d’etat”. ECOWAS called on the plotters to free Bazoum, while the AU urged the “felon” soldiers involved to return to barracks immediately.
Bola Tinubu, president of Nigeria and chair of ECOWAS, said he was already in “close consultation” with other leaders in the region about the situation.
The United States, France, the European Union and the United Nations also condemned the power grab.
A few hours after the news of the president’s detention, a group of soldiers appeared on national television to announce that they had overthrown the government.
“The defence and security forces … have decided to put an end to the regime you are familiar with,” said Niger army spokesman Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane. He said that the country’s borders were closed, a nationwide curfew was in place and that all institutions of the country had been suspended.
Thursday, July 27
In his first communication since the coup, Bazoum said on X that “hard-won gains will be safeguarded”.
“All Nigeriens who love democracy and freedom would want this,” he said.
Bazoum’s Foreign Minister Hassoumi Massoudou also posted on X, calling on “all democrats and patriots” to make this “perilous adventure” fail.
Meanwhile, more foreign leaders condemned the coup. The German foreign ministry said it was following the continuing events with “very great concern”.
Niger’s army declared allegiance to the defence and security forces that overthrew Bazoum. Army Chief of Staff Abdou Sidikou Issa said the decision was necessary to “avoid a deadly confrontation between the various forces”.
France landed a military aircraft in Niger despite an airspace closure imposed after the announcement of the coup, army Colonel Amadou Abdramane said on state television.
In Niamey, supporters of the coup gathered in front of the National Assembly and some moved on to the headquarters of the governing party, which was ransacked and set on fire, sending plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky.
Abdourahmane Tchiani, head of Niger’s presidential guard, named himself head of a transitional government. He made the announcement on state-run television, saying he was the “president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland”.
The 62-year-old general also said the intervention had been necessary to avoid “the gradual and inevitable demise” of the country.
Colonel Abdramane said on state TV that the constitution had been suspended.
ECOWAS announced it would hold an emergency meeting on Sunday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna told French media that President Emmanuel Macron had spoken to Bazoum several times.
The French diplomat said France believed there were still possible exits from the crisis, and that the coup did not have any legitimacy.
Wagner mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, who remains active despite leading a failed mutiny against the Russian army’s top brass last month, hailed the coup and offered his fighters’ services to bring order.
The EU and France cut off financial support to Niger and the United States threatened to do the same.
“In addition to the immediate cessation of budget support, all cooperation actions in the domain of security are suspended indefinitely with immediate effect,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement.
According to its website, the EU has allocated 503 million euros ($554m) from its budget to improve governance, education and sustainable growth in Niger over the 2021-2024 period.
The French foreign ministry said France had suspended all development aid and budget support with immediate effect, demanding a prompt return to constitutional order with Bazoum back in charge. French development aid for Niger was at approximately 120 million euros ($130m) in 2022, and was expected to be slightly higher this year.
Sunday, July 30
As ECOWAS leaders gathered in the Nigerian capital for an emergency summit on what actions to take to restore constitutional order in Niger, military leaders warned against any armed intervention.
“We want to once more remind ECOWAS or any other adventurer of our firm determination to defend our homeland,” military spokesperson Colonel Amadou Abdramane said.
Meanwhile, the 15-nation regional bloc demanded that Bazoum be reinstated within a week. Otherwise, it would take “all measures” to restore constitutional order.
“Such measures may include the use of force for this effect,” ECOWAS said in a statement, adding that its defence chiefs were to meet later on Sunday.
It was not clear how ECOWAS could use force. The West African bloc also slapped financial sanctions on the coup leaders and the country, freezing “all commercial and financial transactions” between member states and Niger.
After attending the meeting, Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby traveled to Niger to meet with military leaders involved in the coup, and to present initiatives to solve the crisis. He also met Bazoum and later posted an image of his meeting with the deposed leader.
The AU issued a 15-day ultimatum to the military government in Niger to reinstall the democratically elected government.
Monday, July 31
The coup leaders alleged that the toppled government had authorized France to carry out an attack on the presidential palace to try to free Bazoum. Abdramane said the authorisation was signed by Foreign Minister Hassoumi Massoudou, acting as prime minister.
Germany said it would halt cooperation with the West African nation with its foreign ministry spokesperson saying that all direct support payments to the central government of Niger would be suspended until further notice.
A planned 30 billion CFA franc ($51m) bond issuance by Niger scheduled in the West African regional debt market was cancelled by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO).

The price of uranium rose slightly as mining operations continued in the world’s seventh-largest producer of the radioactive metal, but a consultancy warned that prices could rise in the coming weeks.
The spot price of uranium, widely used for nuclear energy and treating cancer, crept up to $56.25 a pound from $56.15 a week earlier, market research firm and consultancy UxC said.
The EU’s nuclear agency, Euratom, said it saw no immediate risks to the EU’s nuclear power production should Niger cut its deliveries of uranium due to the military coup.
Eurotom told the Reuters news agency that the bloc had enough uranium inventories to fuel its nuclear power reactors for three years.

An Italian military plane carrying 87 evacuees from Niger arrived in Rome early on Wednesday.
Some 36 Italians, as well as four Bulgarians, two Austrians, and one citizen each from the United Kingdom, Niger, Nigeria, Hungary and Senegal were on the plane, as well as military personnel. There were also 21 United States citizens, a number of whom were part of an evangelical Christian group from Texas, according to the Italian Foreign Ministry.
Niger also announced the reopening of its borders with Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Libya and Mali. The borders that have reopened are mainly in remote desert areas. Niger’s key entryways for trade and commerce remain closed due to restrictions imposed by ECOWAS.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing effort to fix Nigeria requires men and women of impeccable characters and thoroughbred professionals.
Fortunately, Nigeria is never short of such people.
From the six geopolitical zones across the country, they are everywhere, betraying the landscapes with sublime candour and patriotism.
From the array of ministerial nominees submitted to the Senate by President Tinubu, Nigerians are beginning to appreciate the former Lagos State Governor for going for the best brains in all areas of human endeavour to assist him to deliver good governance to our people.
Over the years, Nigerians have yearned for quality leadership.
Unfortunately, however, this has not been so. They have been shortchanged.
Years of poor economic and administrative mismanagement had continued to steer us in our faces, leaving us in a quandary.
Regrettably, leaders have emerged either through religious sentiments or tribal and other cleavages, leaving us with just action, but no movement. Bemused.
Tinubu and any other public figure or corporates, should not look far beyond their shoulders to engage good and patriotic hands to add greater value to them.
One person on my mind is Mr Ganiyu Obaaro.
Gani, as he is fondly called by his peers and colleagues, is a quintessential journalist.
He is imbued with strong academic, administrative leadership and professional standing, as a journalist.
For close to 30 years, after taking up the pen profession, he has won for himself, his family and the National laurels that remain practical testimonies of his professional ability and competence.
Indeed, Gani, who had held highly demanding and sensitive positions as a Business Editor in different media houses, as well as being a current Board Member of a reputable media, has begun leaving imprints on the sands of time.
For example, he won the Nigerian Media Merit Award, NMMA; best staff on several occasions and made credible showings at Cadbury Media and DAME Awards.
Armed with good leadership in his secondary school days, he emerged as the best-graduating student in his class.
He later attended several institutions, including Kwara State College of Technology, Ilorin; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; University of Jos.
Having served his NYSC in Jos, Plateau State, he had a stint in the Federal Civil Service before joining the media profession.
Today, he is a household name, and a well-rounded personality, who distinguished himself in PMNews, Punch, Daily Times, and NewsStar, among other media houses he had worked.
A workaholic, his cool, calm disposition are rare attributes, so difficult to find among people with such competence and brilliance.
He cherishes work. And he does it with so much passion, glee and commitment as a university professor does!
Very active industry player and his friends cut across the country in journalism and other professions.
As a reporter, he has covered Tinubu Administration in Alausa, Ikeja, including distinguished reportage on the then First Lady of Lagos, Her Excellency, Oluremi Tinubu, now, Nigeria’s First Lady.
Gani was one of those who covered Mrs Tinubu’s New Era Foundation, a pet project that gave young, brilliant Lagosians opportunities to excel and advance their educational career.
To the First Lady, the programme, which still operates today in the state, remains a landmark in the development of the nation.
One incident that is worth recalling was when Tinubu, as the governor, had a confrontation with Lagos State Students at the Onikan Stadium over various demands.
The occasion was organised to honour Chief Anthony Enahoro, a nationalist, on his return from exile.
Governor Tinubu, who was ambushed as he made an effort to enter the stadium where the likes of Pa Abraham Adesanya, and Chief Oku Falae were sited and eagerly awaiting him, was very calm.
And just as his security aides were prepared to disperse the angry students, he, Tinubu, told them not to shoot anyone.
Under the military, lives would have been lost.
But not so for this distinguished democrat who, although, was provoked, never allowed violence to rule the day, before he was sandwiched and led by the elders and security operatives into the stadium.
There were many other distinguished reports done by Gani. So numerous that they need more recalling here.
What cannot be denied is that he remains grounded, and could serve as a useful hand in this government.
A family and widely travelled man, Gani’s relationships with his colleagues are laced with respect, honour and love.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) President, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina today celebrated 39 years anniversary with his wife, Yemisi.
Taking to Twitter, Akinwumi wished his wife a happy anniversary, describing her as someone intelligent, kind, humble, and lovely.

Summary :
All major petroleum exporting countries have active refineries for local consumption of petroluem products except ‘giant of Africa’ Nigeria!.
Wonderful!
United States of America with most refineries (129).
When they say ” God bless America “, I dont think it is because the people who reside in USA are so religious.
I think it is more about the determination of the government and the people towards solving challenges facing them.
If Hospitals, Refineries, etc, are established in Nigeria and people (Nigerians, muslims and Christians) are employed to manage them, within few hours, mismanagement and embezzlement of funds will take over.
My Yoruba people say ‘A se ni nse ara e’, translated to:
What we sow is exactly what we harvest!
We mismanaged our 3 refineries and all packed up simultaneously, many years ago.
We haven’t been able to turn them around because of failure of leadership.
Days of reckoning are here!
You see, there is no magic that Heaven will do if we wont do what is right!
Critical thinking towards problem solving, doing what is right and at the right time by government and the citizens, are vital to a prosperous and peaceful Nigeria.
