Ogun Assembly urges Amotekun deployment to Schools amid kidnapping surge

In response to the escalating incidents of kidnappings and insecurity, the Ogun State House of Assembly has advocated for the deployment of the Amotekun Corps, a local security outfit, to schools throughout the state.

This proposal comes in the wake of a distressing case reported by Hon. Oluseun Adesanya, representing Ijebu North-East State Constituency, concerning the ritual killing of a primary school pupil abducted near the school premises.

Speaking during the plenary, Speaker Hon. Oludaisi Elemide emphasized the necessity of collective efforts from residents and both conventional and non-conventional security agencies to tackle the prevailing security challenges. He stressed the importance of leveraging local security, such as the Amotekun Corps, to protect public schools, particularly in primary and secondary education.

Hon. Adesanya, recounting the tragic incident in his constituency, urged the State Government to enhance the security network in public schools statewide.

In a related development, the State Assembly directed the State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, along with the State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), to conduct an assessment of all public schools.

The aim is to ascertain the extent of encroachment on their land, with a focus on preventing such illegal activities for the safety of students.

The directive came after Hon. Ademola Adeniran expressed concern about the encroachment on the premises of Mayflower School, Ikenne.

Speaker Elemide underscored the potential security risks posed by private developers encroaching on public school lands, emphasizing the need for swift action to avert security breaches.

Commending old students’ associations for contributing additional infrastructure to enhance student security and convenience, the Speaker acknowledged their valuable efforts in supporting schools across the State.
