Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Adepoju Wura-Ola as the substantive Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service. Wura-Ola has been in an acting capacity since  June 1, 2023.

2. Amid raging criticism over Nigeria’s large delegation to Dubai for the COP28 climate summit, the Federal Government on Monday said it only sponsored 422 delegates out of the 1,411 Nigerians reported to be at the conference. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris said this in a statement.

3. Osun State Government has assured the leadership of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria in the state that its demands would be attended to in due course. The assurance was given by the Deputy Governor, Mr Kola Adewusi while receiving the JUSUN team led by its state chairman, Gbenga Eludire, who paid him a courtesy visit.

3. The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that the anti-graft agency is creating a centralized system to monitor and track seized landed properties undergoing investigation over alleged money laundering across the country.

4. Huge crowd besieged banking halls on Monday, as customers moved to link their Bank Verification Numbers and National Identity Numbers to their bank accounts. This followed the new directive of the banking regulator to the banks on Friday, to bar customers who were yet to link their BVN and NIN from having access to their accounts.

5. The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has postponed, indefinitely, the inauguration of its newly constituted standing committees. It was gathered that the development followed rejections by some members of the committees, notably, BUA Group chairman, Abdulsamad Rabiu, who was appointed to its finance committee.

6. Benue State House of Assembly has suspended four of its members for a period of three months for allegedly constituting a clog in the smooth running of the House. The members were suspended Monday during plenary after a motion for their suspension was moved by the majority leader of the House, Mr. Saater Tiseer, and seconded by Mr. Peter Ipusu representing Katsina-Ala West State constituency.

7. Abia State Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2023 poll, High Chief Ikechi Emenike, and the APC have picked holes in the Saturday verdict of the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the election of Dr Alex Otti of the Labour Party, LP. Emenike and the Abia APC said they would go to the apex court “in search of justice.”

8. President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mrs Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju as the substantive Comptroller-General (CG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). The President also approved the appointment of six Deputy Comptroller General of the Service with effect from January 1st, 2023.

9. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, has said that it has uncovered a plot by the state governor, Senator Douye Diri, to frame up the APC candidate in the last governorship election in the state, Chief Timipre Sylva. The party alleged that the plot included using one of the anti-corruption agencies in the country to harass Sylva so as to compel him to abandon the case challenging the outcome of the November 11 poll.

10. No fewer than four persons have been confirmed dead in accidents that occurred in different parts of Lagos State on Monday. Confirming one of the accidents, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Sector Commander, Babatunde Farinloye, said a military man, his wife and a motorcycle rider died instantly at the Dantata bus stop along the Badagry Expressway.
