Niger in full agricultural business to cultivate 10,000 hectares per local government

Niger State governor, Farmer Umar Mohamed Bago has prioritized agriculture, outlining an ambitious plan to cultivate 10,000 hectares per local government, totaling an impressive 250,000 hectares in the first year alone.

State Commissioner of Agriculture, Musa Salihu Bawa Bosso, disclosed while fielding questions from Newsmen in his office on the recent agricultural revolution in the state.

Bosso emphasized the vision to cultivate a remarkable 1 million hectares over the next four years.

He further highlighted the flourishing partnerships with the state and other agricultural companies, especially in mechanization, making agriculture more attractive to the youth as a viable business and career option.

With abundant resources, including vast arable land and water bodies, the government is determined to capitalize on these assets, aiming to create jobs, particularly for the youth and women, and boost overall productivity.

Anticipating a significant milestone, Bosso mentioned that the next one to two weeks will witness the commencement of planting.

The federal government recognizes Niger State as a flagship for the agri-business project, focusing on crops such as rice, maize, cassava, and cotton.

Addressing support for farmers, the commissioner highlighted a substantial plan targeting 250,000 farmers across various crops, emphasizing the importance of quality inputs and proper agricultural practices.

He declared, “The comprehensive approach aims to increase yields and transform farming into a sustainable business venture.”

Discussing the broader societal impact, Bosso noted “that the Bago administration’s commitment to agriculture has not only spurred economic growth but has also played a pivotal role in reducing security.” With the provision of employment opportunities and addressing the root causes of unrest, the government aims to foster a more secure and prosperous community.

Bosso emphasized, “The former governor’s administration is unlocking the agricultural potential of Niger State, positioning it as a beacon of sustainable developments.”

He stated that the focus on agriculture is viewed as a key strategy to alleviate poverty, create jobs, and ensure food security, highlighting the governor’s dedication to collaboration and partnership with investors.

“This initiative marks a pivotal moment in restoring Niger State’s agricultural glory, ensuring a prosperous future for its residents.” He added.
