NAFDAC destroys expired goods worth N16bn in Ogun

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday destroyed expired and fake goods worth over N16 billion in Ogun State.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, who was represented by NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Mr Francis Ononiwu, while destroying the goods at the Oke-Diya dump site in the Sagamu Local Government Area of the state said the exercise was part of the agency’s renewed efforts to rid Nigeria of unwholesome regulated products to safeguard the populace’s health.

She noted that the exercise became necessary to prevent the products’ reintroduction into the market. Added that the products were substandard and falsified medical products, unsafe cosmetics, unwholesome processed food additives and counterfeits, and other NAFDAC-regulated products.

However, some of the products were seized by the agency from manufacturers, importers, and distributors, others were voluntarily handed over to NAFDAC by compliant companies, trade unions, and non-governmental organizations.

“NAFDAC has been charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the health of the nation is safeguarded, and as such, it is committed to eliminating expired medical products, illicit drugs, unwholesome foods, chemicals, and other violative products,” she said.
