JAPA: UK ban International Students from working while study

The Home Secretary of the United Kingdom, James Cleverly, on Monday announced the UK plan to decisively cut net migration, says the right for international students to bring dependents will be removed starting from January 2024.

The Home secretary made the announcement on his official X account as he posted a video of him presenting the plan at the UK Assembly.

James Cleverly, is the newly appointed Home Secretary of the United Kingdom. He was appointed in 13th of November 2023

However, He enumerated that the plan is in line with UK efforts of building up their domestic workforce and supporting British workers.

He noted that the UK has also stopped International students from switching out of the students route to the work route before their studies have been completed.

This will help them in reducing the number of international workers and give room for domestic workers to take a higher percentage.

According to him,m “This package plus our reduction in student dependents, will mean around 300,000, fewer people will come in future years than have come to the UK last year.

“From January 2024 the right for international students to bring dependents will be removed, unless they are postgraduate courses designated as a research programme.

“We have also stopped International students from switching out of the students route to the work route before their studies have been completed.

“These measures are possible because we are building up our domestic workforce and supporting British workers.”

PREVENT MISUSE OF THE HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE VISA

We will stop overseas care workers bringing family dependents and require care firms in England to be registered with the Care Quality Commission to sponsor visas. It is estimated this change will reduce arrivals on this route by more than 20 per cent by 2024-25.

ENSURE EMPLOYERS CONSIDER BRITISH WORKERS FIRST

We will increase the earnings threshold by a third to £38,700 from next Spring for those using the skilled worker route, in line with the median full-time wage for these kinds of jobs.

ENSURE PEOPLE CAN ONLY BRING FAMILY MEMBERS TO THE UK THAT THEY CAN FINANCIALLY SUPPORT

We will more than double the minimum
income for family visas to £38,700 – the
same threshold as the minimum salary
threshold for skilled workers.

BANNING OVERSEAS STUDENTS FROM BRINGING FAMILY MEMBERS TO THE UK, UNLESS THEY ARE ON POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH DEGREES

We will tighten the rules on students bringing
family members to the UK. The Migration
Advisory Committee will also review the
graduate route.

Immigration cannot undercut British workers.

It’s just common sense.
