Insecurity: Ooni of Ife Urges President Tinubu to Harness Traditional Rulers in Tackling Insecurity

In a courtesy visit by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi-Ojaja II, called on the President to utilize traditional rulers as a means to address the issue of insecurity in the country.

As the co-chair of traditional rulers in Nigeria, Ooni expressed the readiness of traditional rulers to contribute to national security, stating, “There are areas we will like to work with you, one of which is security. It is time to use us more. We are not saying we are idle, but to make your work easier, use us. The foundation of this country today is the traditional rulers. We are here to pledge our loyalty and support. We want to work with you to ensure you leave a legacy. Don’t underestimate what traditional rulers can do.”

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who co-led the delegation of monarchs, mentioned that such visits were customary whenever there is a change in leadership. He emphasized that traditional rulers, representing various professions from the military to judiciary and business, possess the capabilities to contribute to the betterment of society. He assured President Tinubu that they would be available whenever he reaches out to them.

The Sultan acknowledged the challenges facing the country and expressed confidence in the ability of President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima to deliver on their responsibilities. He said, “We thank God for the smooth way the elections took place. Many negative people thought this country would collapse, but we are still here. We are here for you, for our people, and our country. If you don’t reach out to us, we will reach out to you. We wish you the most successful tenure in good health.”

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, was also present during the visit.
