Farmers in Niger target four million metric tonnes of food this year

Niger State Chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has projected the production of four million metric tons of grains, yams and other food items in this year’s wet season farming.

The chairman of the association, Alhaji Shehu Galadima, stated this while addressing a meeting of the association in Minna.

He said: “AFAN has commenced the special mobilisation of one million smallholder farmers across the 25 local government areas of Niger state for the wet season farming.”

He added that for the 2024 planting season, farmers will concentrate on producing rice, maize, sorghum, soya beans, millet, cowpeas, yam and cotton.

He said, “The expected output from the cultivation of these crops is over four million tons of food. We are working towards actualising the dream of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for Niger state to feed Africa.”

He added that the association will assist farmers with incentives and inputs including improved seedlings, saying that some inputs are already available for farmers.

Galadima said insecurity in parts of the state will not affect the projected food production adding that peace has returned to most communities with adequate security for farmers to return to their farms.
