The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board has suspended two senior officers from the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos due to allegations surrounding Idris Okuneye, a.k.a. Bobrisky prison evade.
The allegations arose after a voice note surfaced, shared by Martins Otse (VeryDarkMan), in which Bobrisky claimed his six-month sentence for the abuse of naira notes was arranged to be served in a private apartment, supposedly facilitated by his godfather and the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government on Wednesday, ordered โan unconditional and comprehensive investigation into the allegations of bribery and corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service NCSโ.
The suspended officers, according to a memo issued on Thursday by the board’s secretary, Jaโafaru Ahmed, are Michael Anugwa, the Deputy Controller of Corrections, DCC in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, MSCC at Kirikiri, and Sikiru Adekunle, also a DCC at the same facility.
The suspension follows the viral claims of misconduct by Nigerian Correctional Service officers.
Additionally, Ogbule Obinna, an officer serving at the MSCC in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was suspended for allegedly escorting an inmate outside of the facility.
โAlso, the Board has suspended ASC II Ogbule Obinna, serving at the MSCC, Afikpo, Ebonyi State, for allegedly accompanying a convicted inmate out of the Custodial Centre to a location outside the facility,โ it added.
Another senior officer of the service serving at the Kuje MSCC, DCC Iloafonsi Ikechukwu was equally suspended for allegedly receiving money on behalf of an inmate.
โIn another related development, the Board has equally suspended another Senior Officer of the Service, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections, In-Charge of Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje-Abuja, for allegedly receiving monies on behalf of an inmate,โ the memo added.
Ahmed, however, said their suspension was to allow proper investigation into the allegations against them.
He said, โThe suspension of these Officers is to allow for further investigation on the various allegations while assuring that the outcome would be made public when concluded.โ
The memo emphasized the need for strict adherence to regulations within the Nigerian Correctional Service.
