Today spotlight shines on youth empowerment and the transformative power of sports as Tama Monday Yari, the Executive Director of the African Center for Youth Development, Education and Advocacy Initiative, a promising Nigerian youth, takes centre stage at the United Nations – African Union Sport Council Youth High-Level Forum.
This prestigious event, ongoing in Ghana from November 21-22, 2023, convenes 20 outstanding youths from across African Union states to deliberate on the pivotal role of young people in the upcoming 13th African Games.
Organized by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, the United Nations Alliance of Civilization, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, The African Union Sport Council, International Centre for Sport Security, 13th African Games Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Ghana, and Ghana National Peace Council, the forum seeks to explore the potential of major sporting events in preventing violent extremism in Africa and globally.
The forum aims to address a series of crucial questions, focusing on leveraging the upcoming African Games in 2024 to promote peace and unity, counteract violent extremism, and engage young people in shaping policies and initiatives. The discussions will revolve around topics such as historical evidence supporting the impact of major sporting events on preventing violent extremism, fostering unity among diverse groups, and utilizing the African Games 2024 for long-term benefits in local communities.
Tama Monday Yari, alongside 19 other selected youths, will actively participate in shaping the discourse on preventing violent extremism through sport. The outcomes of the forum are expected to contribute to the development of effective policies and initiatives, ensuring a lasting impact on youth engagement and community cohesion.
