Former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson lost his battle with cancer and has died at the age of 76.
Eriksson’s demise had been envisaged when he revealed in January that doctors had informed him that he may not live past this year.
The one-time target of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, as head coach of the Super Eagles, became the first non-British manager of the English national team when he succeeded Kevin Kergan in January 2001.
The English side qualified for the 2002 World Cup with highlights of their qualification series being the 5-1 win over Germany in Munich.
At the World Cup final, England was in the same group with Argentina, Sweden, and Nigeria – with the Super Eagles holding them to a 0-0 draw.
They beat Argentina 1-0 and drew with Sweden. However, eventual winners Brazil beat them 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
Eriksson was also in charge of Serie A side Lazio.
His years in the saddle as England manager was marked by scandal as he was said to be dating television presenter, Ulrika Johnson in 2002 and former Football Association secretary, Faris Alam in 2004.
